Bringing children to Cayo Arena requires some planning. The sandbar offers calm, shallow water for swimming. However, reaching the island involves a long drive and a rough boat transfer. Knowing the physical demands helps you decide if this trip fits your family.

Is Cayo Arena safe for kids and non-swimmers?

Yes, the immediate water around the sandbar is calm and shallow.

Depths near the sandbank start very shallow before dropping to 5 meters (16 feet). Non-swimmers can safely stand in waist-deep water. Life jackets are heavily enforced and always required during the 20 to 30-minute speedboat ride.

How rough is the speedboat ride?

The 20 to 30-minute transfer from Punta Rucia features strong waves.

Because the boats cross open ocean water, the ride gets bumpy. Operators explicitly warn against the speedboat for individuals with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. Make sure young children are comfortable sitting securely in a fast-moving boat.

Will the full-day tour be too long for young children?

It might be, as guided excursions from Puerto Plata take 7 to 10 hours.

You will spend about 1.5 to 2 hours driving the 90 km to Punta Rucia before getting on the boat. Most tours spend only 1.5 to 2 hours actually on the sandbar. Families with toddlers often find the transit time exhausting.

Is there shade on the island?

Shade is very limited because Cayo Arena has no natural vegetation.

There are a few thatched huts on the sand. These huts fill up quickly when tours arrive between 11 AM and 3 PM. Bring a rash guard for extra sun protection in the water and a hat with a chin strap.

Should I book a private boat or a group tour?

Booking a private local boat lets you set your own family schedule.

Driving a rental car to Punta Rucia allows you to hire a local boat at the shore. Local transfers start from $50 to $80. This lets you arrive before 10 AM, avoiding the heaviest crowds and the midday heat.

What should families pack?

Bring reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen and medication if your kids get seasick.

  • Swimwear and quick-dry cover-ups.
  • A waterproof dry bag for electronics during the speedboat ride.
  • Cash (USD or DOP) for tips and extra drinks.
  • Motion sickness medication for the bus and boat.

Questions travellers ask

Are there restrooms on Cayo Arena?

No, the sandbar has no restrooms or running water. Use the facilities at the beachfront restaurants in Punta Rucia before boarding the boat.

Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?

Most standard tour packages include the use of snorkeling equipment. If you hire a local boat directly at the beach, confirm if gear is included.

Can kids see manatees on the tour?

Sightings are rare. The nearby Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary protects West Indian manatees, but you should not expect guaranteed sightings.
